SMi secures a fourth patent – in Singapore

Regulatory News

SMi Systems is delighted to have been awarded a patent for its core single-molecule imaging technology in a fourth region. This adds to its growing portfolio of proprietary technology and process patents. This technology patent has been granted by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.

SMi’s platform uses highly specialised optics that detect and image single molecules. Incorporating a uniquely large field of view, the technology is capable of measuring the individual properties of tens of thousands of molecules per second, and the interactions between them.

SMi‘s automated benchtop platform can be used by non-specialist operators in any laboratory environment. By integrating the instrument with custom consumables and software that automatically set up and configure the system, high performance analysis is fast and reliable. The capability to analyse single molecules means that the approach is extremely sensitive and highly accurate. In short, SMi offers a fast and easy to use method for rapid single-molecule detection.

By measuring the properties of individual molecules it is possible to understand the properties of the whole population in great detail, recording heterogeneity and exposing rare events that are missed in traditional bulk measurement approaches.

The granting of the patent in Singapore is another step towards protecting SMi’s innovations across multiple key geographies. “Having patents granted in an increasing number of international jurisdictions is a demonstration that SMi’s highly innovative approach is recognised across the globe”, says Dr Andrew Thompson, CEO at SMi. “We are extremely proud that our scientists and engineers are driving the development of groundbreaking solutions, and that this particular patent has been acknowledged as such by patent authorities in Asia as well as in the UK and the US.”
